vmware-cmd register command
I have been running the following command successfully in a script for several months now.
vmware-cmd --server 192.168.5.29 --vihost 192.168.5.28 -s register "/vmfs/volumes/192.168.5.28/CloneTestBackup/CloneTestBackup.vmx" ".5network" "Resources"
(yes the datastore is named after the ip address of the ESXi host)
I upgraded my Vmware vCenter Server Appliance from 5.1 to 5.5 and since then the command has not been working.
I get the following error:

Fault detail: InvalidArgument
A specified parameter was not correct.
The data center and resource pool are correct because when I change their names I get a different error.
I can register the machine successfully from the vSphere Client and the Web Interface but it always fails for any vmx file from the vMA.
The unregister command works fine it is only the register command that fails.

Getting frustrated trying to get a password in vMA 5.5.0.0-1387931
I'm trying to set up vMA to get the APC Network Shutdown installed, and I'm really getting annoyed here.
I'm on a danish keyboard, so I'm trying to do it as simple as possible, to elimitate problems with keyboard mapping.
So after booting the vMA, setting the IP, it prompts me for a password for the va-admin user.
First I enter vmware for the old password, and then I enter Qazx1234! (as ! is mapped the same way on the 1 key on english and danish keyboard).
It accepts the password and boots up.
Then at the blue window, I press enter to login, gives it 'va-admin' as username and Qazx1234! as password, and it fails every time.
I've tried all sorts of tricks, like entering keyboard.typematicMinDelay = "2000000" in the vmx, but that didn't help.
I can't authenticate through the webinterface either.
How hard can it be? And why does vmware care what password we use anyways, its up to US to handle security, not them.

VMware vMA and free ESXi - which ESXi license do you need so that vMA is usefull?
I'm just evaluating vMA 5.5 with my home-lab of a few free ESXi 5.5-servers and now after reading some documentations I was trying my first few commands in the vMA-machine.
So i registered my first ESXi-server with the vifp command, connected to it and then I just wanted to turn on my test-guest-vm:
vmware-cmd /vmfs/volumes/401176d6-90e595dc/test-debian/test-debian.vmx start
Operation cannot be performed:
SOAP Fault:

Fault string: Current license or ESXi version prohibits execution of the requested operation.
Fault detail: RestrictedVersionFault
So WTF, you even cannot turn on/off a VM with command-line operations with the free version or am I doing it wrong???
Which license do you need for ESXi to use even the most itsy bitsy common features with vMA?
What is even possible with vMA 5.5 and the free ESXi, only read-only operations?
Have to ask here, because I didn't find anything on vMA with free ESXi license restrictions.

Do I have to use vMA 5.5 for ESXi 5.5?
Hi,
We have Powerchute agents in vMAs running vMA 5.0
If we upgrade the ESXi to 5.5. does it follow that we must use vMA 5.5? Or will an older vMA still work with a newer ESXi?

vMA and apparent firewall issue
I deployed a new copy of the vMA 5.5.0.1. Immediately after deployment, I was able to ping the vMA and ssh into it. After running for about 24 hours, I am no longer able to ping or ssh into the appliance. If I connect to the console, I am able to ping the default gateway and other esxi hosts. What am I missing here?

you know vMA require IP pool, i did it then after deploy vMA 5.1 or 5.5 then the vMA not pingable, its only pingable from same subnet machines.

Best way to configure vMA 5.5.0.1 with ESXi cluster inside vCenter?

Just setup my first vMA box in my environment and I'm having some confusion on how to best set this up to authenticate to ESXi boxes managed by vCenter. I added the vcenter as a AD authentication server and I can connect to it through vMA and send commands to all my hosts. The only problem is that each time I run a command, it will ask for username and password each time. Am I suppose to setup fastpass authentication somewhere as wel?

New to VMA, question on esxcli
I am new to VMA. I find it is going to be very useful.
A question I have is when running esxcli against many hosts, is it possible to just add vcenter as a target? It doesnt appear that is enough, that I have to have each esx host as a target in order to run esxcli commands against a host. Thank you.

PCNS 3.1 in vMA for ESXi 5.5 in HA with 2 different UPS models
Hello, I have following configuration: 1. floor - ESXi host A with several VM’s (HP VSA, Windows and Linux) - ESXi host B with free vSphere hypervisor license (will be changed to Essential) with vCenter and vMA installed - Smart UPS (Model: Smart-UPS 5000 RM with NMC: AP9617) 2. floor - ESXi host C with several VM’s (HP VSA, Windows and Linux) - Smart UPS (Model: Smart-UPS RT 5000 XL with NMC: AP9631) ESXi host A and ESXi host C are in HA. I tried to configure PCNS (OVA) on vMA and choose Advanced (VM Migration Support) in UPS configuration page. I added two IP addresses for two UPS but then I got this error - All UPS's in this Configuration must be the same model. So what is the solution for esxi hosts in HA cluster with VM migration enabled if I have two "different" UPS and I want correct shutdown and start for all VM's and hosts? (other one then buy new UPS...) Thanks

SSH Client Broken After Upgrade to 5.1.0.2
I just upgraded vMA to 5.1.0.2 and can no longer connect to other hosts via SSH:
ssh <username@servername>

HDVM-VMA combination to auto create storage
Hello,
One of the forum postings explained the procedure to deploy VMA, install Hitachi Device Manager and use this combination to obtain information.
Can this scenario be handled using the VMA-HDVM combination?
1) A eager-zeroed thick volume is mapped from a Hitachi VSP to the hypervisor
2) VMDKs have been carved out of this volume
3) If more capacity is required and the existing volume does not have sufficient free space, another volume of a specific size is automatically created on the VSP and mapped to ESX which will carve out VMDKs on this volume and allocate it to the VMs
If this is possible, I would like the high level set of steps to accomplish this task. Pointers to docs will be especially helpful.
In the meantime, I will be looking at the VMA documentation.

vMA unable to join domain (Unresolved Domain Name)
It looks like I might be the only one having this problem.
I've recently installed the vMA appliance and used this PDF as an installation guide:

The Domain controller is a Windows 2008 R2.
The vMA server is vSphere 5.5.0.3 Build 2301366
(vMA was updated to this version immediately after the install via the web interface)
Following the instruction to join the local domain that vcenter is on I ran this command:
sudo domainjoin-cli --loglevel verbose --log . join <my_domain> Administrator
(I added the loglevel and log argument after experiencing the problem in order to provide better error details below)

How to allow selected domain users to login to VMA??
hi guys,
Anyone aware of any method to allow restrictive access to VMA? If I want to allow specific set of AD users to be able to login to VMA how can it be acheived?
I believe creating AD security group and adding that group to VMA would be the way to go but as VMA is basically Linux, I am unsure where or what to edit on VMA to make this happen?
Any good instructions on this would be helpful.

Question about SNMP trap test output to .cvs
Hello,
I am preparing for my VCAP exam and need some help with saving the cvs to a local folder.
VCAP Objective:
Setup SNMP and save the test trap to .cvs on your PC.
vMA SNMP setup:
vicfg-snmp -c public
vicfg-snmp -t server.local@161\public
vicfg-snmp -E
vicfg-snmp -s
I run this command and the .cvs is placed into the vMA BIN folder instead of my test folder.
vicfg-snmp -T > c:\SNMP\snmptest.cvs
CLi
esxcli system snmp -T > c:\snmp\test.cvs
No output
Can someone point me in the right direction with why the > file location is not working?

VMA 6 Root SSH Access
Trying to setup ESXi free UPS shutdown solution just like it did for VMA5.5. I cannot get VMA 6 to allow root SSH login.
I can login with root locally just fine. After several attempts via ssh I get locked out of root..even locally :-/
What I've verified and done
/etc/hosts.allow --> sshd: ALL: ALLOW
/etc/ssh/sshd_config --> PermitRootLogin yes
/etc/init.d/sshd restart
What am I missing? Thanks.

New vMA v6 Server Error(s) Running an ESXCLI command: Connect failed. Server SHA1 thumbprint (not trusted)
New vMA v6 server. Added two, new ESXi v6 hosts to the vMA with no issues. When I change target to one of these new hosts, and try to run " esxcli system syslog reload ", I receive the error: Connect failed. Server SHA1 thumbprint [thumb print listed here] (not trusted).
Research tells me what to do if I get this error running and ESXCLI command on my PC, but nothing about when it happens in the vMA.
Any help is appreciated folks - thanks!

vifp addserver fails with error failed to add user
This my first post to this forum as I could not find answer through Google search. If I do not use correct terminology or fail to provide full information, please pardon me. I am not an expert on VMWare, just a curious tech enthusiast. I find VMWare to be a very exciting product and easy to use. The VMWare knowledge base is excellent and so is the user community.
I have home setup of free VMWare ESXi 6.0 on Dell T420 and T110 II servers. I recently tested vMA 5 by installing it as a VM on one of the servers. I watched the Youtube tutorial on how to use vifp to add servers. I have setup networking etc. on vMA and it works fine. Auto update worked. When I issues the command sudo vifp addserver 192.168.250.96, I am prompted for the password. When I enter the password, I get an error Error: failed to add users. I have checked the log file at /var/opt/vmware/vma/vifpd.log and the most descriptive message is:
addserver: Error occurred while adding users for 192.168.250.96 ..rolling back. An error occurred while creating users on 192.168.250.96
Then I noticed that since I am using the vMA console to run these commands, as soon as the error occurs, I see that in the bottom area, under Recent Tasks, I see an error: general system error occurred: weak password. The error detail says:
Weak password: not enough different characters or classes.
Now, my password is pretty strong. I cannot post it here but I will post a similar password:

It is 14 characters and has numbers, uppercase letter, lowercase letters and special character. I have read the VMWare documentation on passwords and to me, the password looks just fine. Any help will be appreciated.

Running 3rd Party RAID Management Commands?
Hi All,
When I SSH directly in to one of my hosts, there's a command set available to manage/monitor the RAID called promise-raid-cli. I can access this simply by typing promise-raid-cli and this opens a new set of command options to me.
I am trying to use the vMA, and target an ESXi host directly and run this command but it says not found. How come? Should this act as if I am at the shell locally?
I even went as far a finding out exactly where this file was on the ESXi system, it's /sbin/promise-raid-cli, from the vMA and on a specific ESXi target, I did a cd /sbin/ then promise-raid-cli and I still get nothing. I even do an LS and it's not listed. However an LS on the local ESXi shell shows this file.
Why can't the vMA run or see this command?

I am trying to patch JRE to 1.7.0_76 on our vMA per this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2112648
Our vMA does not have internet connectivity so I am used the section under the KB for 'Updating Existing vMA Installation by Using tar.gz Update Bundle'
My vMA's web files (.xml and .html files) were located under /opt/vmware/share/htdocs
I made a /repo directory there and extracted the tar file to the /opt/vmware/share/htdocs/repo directory.
In the vMA web client under Settings, I saved the repository url as https://ip-address-of-vma:5480/opt/vmware/share/htdocs/repo
After clicking the 'Check Updates' button I get the following error:
Failed to check for updates(Error downloading manifest. Please contact your vendor. couldn't connect to host URL: https://ip-address-of-vma/opt/vmware/share/htdocs/repo/manifest/manifest-latest.xml) on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 12:56:09 PM GMT-04:00
I contacted VMware Support and they noted VMware Communities is the only place that supports vMA.

How to handle "target datastore is full" errors?
Hi all,
we managed to run ghettoVCBg2 on vSphere 6.0 and vMA 6.0.
Unfortunately our backup datastore reached it's maximum capacity resulting in failing backups (e.g. the large VMDK files are missing).
There are no error or debug messages in ghettoVCBg2's log file.
How can we handle this (besides monitoring the target backup datastore and providing sufficient storage space ;-)?
vifs supports only "--dir <remotedir>" but that does not show the size of the files living in <remotedir>.
What would be the best approach after backup to check if all files made it to the backup target datastore?

VMA Network Permissions Denied
Hello,
Im deploying a 5.5 vMA and when I try and configure the network it keeps coming up as permissions denied. This is logged in as VI-Admin.
I run:
/opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_config_net
then thru the menu I add the ip addess then get a few permission denied
IOError: [Error 13] Permission denied
dev/.sysconfig/network-sysconfig/config-eth0 permission denied <----Even the gate

Reconfigure IP settings in vMA (vSphere Management Assistant)
It's quite natural that it might come a moment when we need to change (ie reconfigure) IP settings of the vMA. But nowhere it's written how to achieve this! All we know is that if we fire up a newly installed vMA, we have a console to configure IP settings. But how to re-fire up this 1st time console? There's visibly none!
Fortunately, vMA is based on RedHat, so this is the command we need to run:
sudo system-config-network

UPS Shutdown script for VM`s (vMA). ESXi 5.5
Hi! Anyone, help me, please. I have vMA 5.5 with conneсtions to some servers, ESXi 5.5 Update 2, APC UPS`s together with servers, customized NUT - software for work with UPS. Purpose is shutdown virtual machines, when electricity is switched off, then UPS`s begin to work. I need a test script for my ESXI that can does it, like these.
But there are old scripts for ESXi Version 3.5 or 4 and when I launch these, my Perl doesn`t work, giving an error.
Probably it`s a conflict between versions. I can`t update my Perl too, because SUSE find system files, which interfer to update (picture 2).
Do you know, where I can find shutdown script for my ESXi version? I couldn`t found it in the Internet.

What should i do more ? i want only add 3 esxi servers to vMA and next login to those esxi without puting passwords.
Interesting is when i deployed next vMA02 and VM03 i can only add one esxi to vMA. During adding Second and third esxi generate that same errors... Now i have 1 vMA for each host .....
Please about suggestion and help.... because my adventure with vMA is not good... last time i was problem with this vMA 5.5 The session is not authenticated after connect to target ESXi and dont resolved this in my second lab...

vMA 6.0 Active Directory user login
I've successfully joined vMA to AD domain, however AD users can login to appliance only using local console (login: class\Administrator) but not using ssh.

Zypper update of freshly installed VMA 6 makes SSHD unstartable

Just installed a fresh VMA 6, update with the web GUI to VMA 6.0.0.1 Build 3755529
So as everybody knows several security flaws in Linux have been discovered. So we need to update the packages on this server.. After the fresh install, 250 updates would need an update.

After ignoring the above failed packages and rebooting the server, I'm unable to SSH into the server. using the VMware console show sme that the sshd service is stopped and I'm unable to start it.
I get:
symbol lookup error and undefined symbol: FIPS_mode
Did someone ever try to update their VMA 6? Why doesn't this work? Any suggestions?

Can I run a vMA 5.5 version to manage and an Esxi \vcenter 6 deployment? I have a tool that utilises the vMA to monitor my esxi 6 environment. .. but it doesn't support running a later version of vMA. Is it safe to do this?

vMA Migrate Virtual Machine
I am having a heck of a time trying to find documentation on how to use vMA to migrate a VM from one host to another. I'm not talking storage vMotion, just simply migrating a machine from one host to another on shared storage. Is it that this is not an option? I would expect that it is.
Using vMA 5.5 or 6.0, how do I move a VM from one host to another from the command line?

Configure powerfail on different ESXi hosts with rccmd
Hello,
i`m quite new to VMWare and i`m trying to set up the shutdown behavior on powerfail with our ups.
We have two hosts on different sites, each of them plugged into an ups.
The hosts are configured as HA Cluster without DRS. No VM will start automatically.
The communication from the ups to the hosts works via a rccmd client
I want to achieve:
On powerfail of one ups all the VMs from this host should be moved automatically via vMotion to the other host and after 10 minutes the host should gracefully shutdown.
Of course this should also apply to the other host as well.
I installed one vMA to one host and linked both hosts to this vMA.
After that i installed the rccmd client on the vMA and configured it as well for both hosts.
My problem: If one site has a powerfail this would shutdown both hosts right?
When i install one vMA for each host and i have a powerfail on one site the vMA would be moved to the other host where already the other vMA exists.
Can i somehow exclude specific VMs from vMotion?
Or is my approach completely wrong?

I just installed Free ESXI vSphere 5.5 in a lab environment to try and configure Health alerting since it is not including on Free. I have my vMA installed and configured on my host but now I need to find the script to transfer it to my VM. I am having a hard time finding and downloading the package.
Does anyone have any insight on where I can download this package?

resxtop on vMA6.5
Hi,
If I run resxtop on vma6.5 I get the following error message:
/usr/lin/vmware-vcli/bin/resxtop: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory
Anyone else seen this? Is there a workaround?

VMA going away in 7.0 ... how to APC UPS shutdown?
I am in the process of setting up VMware free ESXi 6.5, and during the setup process it is stated that VMA support is going away in the future.
As we all know, the power failure shutdown method so far has involved VMA, Java, and APC's free PowerChute Network Shutdown utility, using VMA to shut down guests and turn off the hypervisor.
What is going to be the new method for automatic shutdown of guest operating systems and then turning off the hypervisor, using the APC network management interface, if VMA will not be usable anymore?

Hi Team, I trying to license my vm hosts

I have two hosts and I have vcenter installed to manage to a vm cluster, I was previously on version 5.1 and recently upgrade to version 6 and I am trying to load the previous license and assign it to both the hosts and vcenter.
I am able to load the license on the license manager but I cannot assign the license to the hosts nor the vcenter.
